First, switch to Firefox -- here
For additional security, get these addons for Firefox:

1. IETAB - allows you to switch between Firefox and IE within Firefox
2. Adblock Plus - Removes unwanted ads from webpages
3. adblock filterset.g - a large adware list that has a built in updater
4. Remove it permanently - remove embedded ads thate adblock misses
5. Flashblock - turns off flash advertising except the ones you specify
6. redirect remover - removes annoying double links that are built into some websites.

Now, download Spybot Search and Destroy - here
When you download and install this, run the updater, then activate the Immunizer

Next, get SpywareBlaster - here
Same as above. Update it, then enable all protection.

For a free AntiVirus solution, use Avast! - here
You will have to register it, but it is free. The only drawback is you have to re-register every year, but for free, it is the best all-around Antivirus program.

By using these few things, you will be able to lockdown your pc, and eliminate about 95% of viruses, spyware, and unwanted ads.
